Boards designed with hull contours to maximize drive off the bottom in the dead water part of the pool

We’re finding that the Magnum Opus hybrid fish / shortboard model goes great at the pools too.

The drive it gets off the bottom, in the dead water part of the pool,

is a special feature where most boards seem to have a tendency to get stuck behind the section when you do a proper bottom turn,

but the Opus gallops along like a happy puppy let loose at the beach.

Gid up an git after it yeeeew!!

a question I’ve been getting lately, and it’s an important one

What’s a good shape for the pools?

Since anything that’s artificial is never like the real thing no matter how hard they sell it, it’s good to know how to harness what power there is from the pools. From a designer’s perspective, I’ve had the opportunity on regular occasions to be invited to artificial wave technologies (something I used to say I would never do, even if someone paid for me to go).

Then it happened, so how could I say no? And what I’ve found is that it’s actually incredibly fun. I mean if you take the feeling of saltwater and sand and sea creatures and tides and swell direction and the beach out of the equation. And if you’re in good company and there’s plenty of opportunity for plenty of empty waves…then it’s amazing. But something I noticed that definitely affects the geometry; the physics of naturally breaking waves vs. man made, is that all the energy is in the top half of the wave. The natural pull of the wave from the trough is not there, so bottom turns have to be made in still water which can stop you in your tracks, force double-triple-quadruple stage bottom turns that can be kinda clicky as opposed to rail drivey. UNLESS (and that’s a big ‘unless’) you’ve gotta hull contour under your craft that can harness some energy out of something that ain’t there.

That’s where the single to deep single drop rocker concaves with tri-plane inset full barrel doubles tap an unbefore renewable resource of what I’m calling ‘water on water’ energy. The #Velocimonsta2030 has it and @jakesstrength understands how to harness it. Visit the Velocimonsta page to see what it looks like.

On a recent trip to the test tank…we tried putting the rocker and hull contours of the Magnum Opus onto the revered Pipsqueak outline from years ago. So far, it shows flashes of absolute brilliance. Especially under the feet of a savant like @805_marine  – And methinks it will be a fast easy board for all skill levels.

We’re going with larger MR style side fins and a grom center thruster fin in the back. It’s so much fun to blend and mix multiple design concepts into a new craft with its whole own new personality.

Maybe that’s why God made every single person that’s ever lived, totally unique and different in their own way. And maybe that’s why the boards we ride should also take a unique one-of-a-kind design approach …for each person and every different kind of wave. How marvelous the design process is that always reveals new realms that take us to new domains of joy.

My vision for Proctor Surfboards

What surfing is to me: The striving to make some sense out of all the fragmentation I see going on in the world.

Finding something beautiful from the power source generated by the lines of energy God created for us to wing upon. Navigating the turbulence, attempting  some balance of peace out of chaos. Mix that in with the camaraderie of the tribe, and you have something so real and pure.

Recently I hit a low and needed those friends that come in so clutch when navigating the mountains and valleys of life. Sometimes it’s very surprising who comes along and shoulders some of the weight until your back on your stride again.

This last week my friend Stephen showed up and said c’mon let’s go surf, and then my friend Nick said yeah let’s go…let’s load the truck up with boards and let’s test out that newest design. My talented friend Edwin said he was down to document it. So we set off on a two-day adventure…Here’s a sneak peak of a few moments of realness during our getaway from the routines of life; a recharge, a reboot.

A special gift that keeps you truckin towards positivity and health…so you can be even better equipped to be ‘present’ when you’re at home, loving your family…it’s called “Goin Surf in” – a new series where sometimes it takes you across the street to your local beach, sometimes you arrive by boat or plane, sometimes you gotta drive for hours or hitch a ride…sometimes it’s two foot empties blown out and barely surfable in the rain. Other times it’s sunny, overhead, glassy and perfect.

It can be a beachie, reef or point. Sometimes it’s a pool. Sometimes it’s a far off destination. We’ll be talking board designs at the factory, and looking at hulls in the boat yard.

But it’s primarily gonna be about surfing with friends, re-crossing paths with old friends, and making new friends along the way…and sometimes you get the wave of the day when you least expect it…coming soon… todd proctor surfboard shaper signature
